How to Make an Excel Combination Chart
An Excel Combination Chart has two Y-Axes each with their own Scaling.

Chart from one to four Fields along the Primary Y Axis and one Y field along the Secondary Y Axis.
Use Excel Sum, Average, Min, Max or Count Functions for both the Primary and Secondary Fields.

Here is how to create an Excel Bar Chart of Sale$ (Y1) & Cost$ (Y2)
by State (X) and an Excel Line Chart of Sales Counts (Y3) by State (X)

1. Start with a Worksheet containing the Excel Data.
Click the EZ-Chart Icon and select 'Create Combo Chart'

Automatically Summarized Data
created by EZ-Chart in seconds.

Within seconds EZ-Chart assigns the automatically summarized
data to the user's customized Combination Excel Chart Template and
creates an Excel Embedded Chart and optional Excel Separate Chart.

How to Make an Excel Chart in Seconds
Using EZ-Chart's Master Excel Chart Templates

   •    Step 1: Hide detail data not to be included in Charts.
In making Excel Charts EZ-Chart automatically extracts and summarizes only the visible detail data.
Note:
Use Excel Data Filters to set the visible data to be used for charting.
Note:
Use EZ-Chart's "Select Rows by Value" option on the "Column" right-click menu for more powerful and flexible data selection that does not rely on Excel Data Filters.
Note:
Additional right-click options include "Export Visible Data" and "Unhide All Rows".
Note:
The original data can be a non-totaled, totaled or subtotaled Excel List beginning in cell A1.
Note:
EZ-Chart automatically skips subtotal rows and column totals whether or not they are hidden.
Note:
The format of the original data is not modified by EZ-Chart's automatic data extraction and automatic data summarization.

   •    Step 2: Select the data fields to be charted.
Left-Click to select the first column and Control + Left-Click to select additional individual columns for the chart data.
Note:
Graph Fields should be individually selected; do not select multiple Fields as one selection.
Note:
When automatically summarizing data the following rules apply:
•   The first non-numeric field selected is the X-Axis field.
•   The first four numeric fields selected are the Y-Axis fields; Y1 through Y4.
•   If a second non-numeric field is selected beyond the first non-numeric X-Axis field, and at least one Y-Axis field is selected, EZ-Chart automatically switches from data summarization for an XY Type Chart to data summarization for an XYZ Type Chart using only the first selected numeric field as the single Y-Axis field.
•   If only two non-numeric fields are selected, EZ-Chart uses the first as the X-Axis field and the second as Y1-Axis field, and creates a Chart of the Counts of the Y1 field for each X field.

   •    Step 3: Click the EZ-Chart icon on the EZ-Excel tool bar.
Select "Create Quick Chart" to open the "Select Quick Chart Excel Chart Type" dialog.
Note:
"Create Quick Chart" is only active if at least two fields have been individually selected, and at least one of the fields is non-numeric (the X-Axis field).
Note:
Other options include "Create X-Count Combo Chart" and "Create Combo Chart" (both 2 Y-Axes).

   •    Step 4: Select an Excel Chart Type.
Use either of the first two drop downs to select the Excel Chart Type.
Note:
Excel Chart Types in the first drop down have a user-defined custom Excel Chart Template in the "Quick Chart" Master Chart Template file.
Note:
The second drop down lists all 73 standard Excel Chart Types whether or not they have a user-defined customized Excel Chart Template.

   •    Step 4 (continue): Modify the additional Chart settings.
Optionally change the following additional options in the "Select Quick Chart Excel Chart Type" dialog.
•
Whether or not to open the EZ-Chart "Chart Properties" dialog during the chart creation process.
•
Whether or not to count only the unique Y value occurrences for each X value when creating a Chart of Counts (only applies when the selected X and Y fields are both non-numeric).
•
Whether or not to create a Separate Chart for the selected Excel Chart Type.
•
The ability to change the Tab Name automatically assigned by EZ-Chart, and
•
The ability to set the user's "Default Chart Type" to the Chart Type of the Excel Chart Template displayed in the first drop down.

Note: The user's Default Chart Type is used to format Excel Charts when the selected Excel Chart Type does not have an Excel Chart Template in the EZ-Chart "Quick Chart" Master Template file.

   •    Step 4 (finish): Click "OK" button or "Excel" button.
Note:
Clicking the OK button closes the dialog and proceeds as described below except that Step 5 is automatically skipped.
Note:
Clicking the Excel button closes the dialog and proceeds as described below including Step 5 which will open the standard Excel Chart Type dialog.
•    EZ-Chart immediately and automatically extracts and summarizes only the visible data for the selected chart fields.
•    EZ-Chart creates a new worksheet for the automatically extracted and summarized chart data.
•    EZ-Chart creates an Embedded Excel Chart on the Chart Data Worksheet using the user selected Excel Chart Type and the appropriate Excel Chart Template.
Note:
If the selected Excel Chart Type has a "Quick Chart" Excel Chart Template, the Excel Template is used to format every feature of the Embedded Excel Chart.
Note:
If the selected Excel Chart Type does not have a "Quick Chart" Excel Chart Template EZ-Chart uses the formatting of the user's Default Chart Type for every chart feature except for the Excel Chart Type.
Note:
EZ-Chart automatically sets the Chart Data Range to the summarized Chart Data, sets the Series Data for each Chart Series, positions the Chart Legend, assigns the Chart Axis labels and creates the Chart Title.

   •    Step 5: The standard "Excel Chart Type" dialog optionally opens.
If the "Excel" button was clicked to close the "Select Quick Chart Excel Chart Type" dialog, the standard Excel Chart Type selection dialog opens defaulted to Excel Chart Type of the new Embedded Excel Chart.
Note:
The standard Excel Chart Type selection dialog can be used to change and preview different Excel Chart Types.

   •    Step 6: The "Quick Chart Properties" dialog optionally opens.
If "Edit Quick Chart Properties" was checked in the "Select Quick Chart Excel Chart Type" dialog the "Quick Chart Properties" dialog opens allowing these additional selections.
•
The number of X values to Chart.
•
The number of Z values to Chart if the chart is an XYZ Chart.
•
The position of the Embedded Excel Chart; either to the right of the Chart Data or below the Chart Data.
•
Whether or not to create a Separate Excel Chart, and
•
The ability to change the Tab Name automatically assigned by EZ-Chart.
•
Click "OK" to finish Step 6.

   •    Step 7: Final steps all automatically performed by EZ-Chart.
EZ-Chart performs the following actions for automatically making Excel Charts.
•
EZ-Chart repositions the Embedded Chart either to the right of the Chart Data or to below the Chart Data.
•
EZ-Chart renames the Chart Data worksheet to either the default Tab Name or to the user provided override Tab Name.
•
If a Separate Excel Chart has been requested EZ-Chart creates the Separate Excel Chart using the appropriate Excel Chart Template.

Note: The EZ-Chart "Quick Chart" Master Chart Template contains both an Embedded Chart Template and a Separate Chart Template for each Excel Chart Type saved by the user.
•
Other than for the Chart Type, every other formatting feature of the Embedded Excel Chart Template and the Separate Excel Chart Template can be different for each Excel Chart Type.
•
EZ-Chart assigns the automatically summarized Chart Data as a contiguous Range of Data to both the Embedded Excel Chart and the Separate Excel Chart, sets the "Series in:" to Columns (not to Rows), sets the Excel Chart Series Name and Excel Chart Series Values for each of the Y fields (and if applicable, for the Z field), and sets the Category X Axis Labels value.
•
If the Chart Templates for the selected Excel Chart Type have Chart Titles, EZ-Chart automatically creates a Chart Title using the Field Names of the selected fields and updates the Charts with the new Chart Title.
•
EZ-Chart sorts the Chart Data rows in descending order by the first Y field.
•
EZ-Chart sorts the Chart Data columns in ascending order by the Z field descriptions.
•
EZ-Chart sets the maximum number of X values to chart based on the Y1 field values.
•
If the chart is an XYZ chart EZ-Chart sets the number of Z values to chart based on the Z field descriptions.
•
EZ-Chart formats each of the following for printing: (1) the Chart Data worksheet and Embedded Chart (Portrait), (2) the Embedded Chart object (Landscape) and (3) the Separate Chart (Landscape).

   •    Step 8: Save Charts to the Master Excel Chart Template.
Save the Excel Chart formatting of the automatically made Excel Charts to the
EZ-Chart Master Excel Chart Template for automatic re-use with new chart data.

•
At any time save the custom formatting of the Embedded Excel Chart and the associated Separate Excel Chart by selecting "Save to Quick Chart Master" on the right-click menu from inside the Chart Data Worksheet containing the Embedded Chart.
•
The Embedded and Separate Charts are saved in the Excel Chart Template by Excel Chart Type.
•
If the Chart Type of the associated Separate Chart is currently different from that of the Embedded Chart, the Chart Type of the Separate Chart will be changed to match the Embedded Chart Type after the Charts have been copied to the Excel Chart Master File.
•
If a Separate Chart does not exist in both the current workbook and in the Master Chart Template, a Separate Chart of the same Excel Chart Type will be automatically created in the Master Chart Template using the Chart Formatting of the Embedded Chart.

The custom formatting of the Embedded Charts and Separate Charts in the Master Excel Chart Template are automatically re-used whenever Quick Charts are created for Excel Chart Types having Master Chart Templates.

The Data Format Requirements for
Making Excel Charts with EZ-Chart

   •    The Excel Data to be charted must begin in cell A1.
   •    The Excel Data to be charted must be in the form of an Excel List - see the next Section.
   •    The Excel Data to be charted can be non-totaled, totaled or subtotaled.
   •    Properly separated Column Totals below the Excel Data are excluded during automatic data summarization.
   •    Subtotaled Excel Data is not technically an Excel List, but it will be used to make an Excel Chart.
   •    When making an Excel Chart Subtotal Rows are excluded during automatic data summarization.
   •    Every Excel Data Column should have a unique Field Description or Column Description.
   •    The Excel List should not contain horizontally merged cells or vertically merged cells.
   •    For best results the cell format of cells in row two should not be Excel's "General" format.
   •    EZ-Chart determines the Excel Data Type of each field from the cell formats in row two.
   •    EZ-Chart works best with Excel Data that is explicitly defined as Numeric, Text and Date.
   •    If possible avoid using Excel's "General" cell format type and Excel's "Normal" Style.
   •    Like Excel, EZ-Chart may on occasion incorrectly handle data defined as "General".
   •    Follow Microsoft's recommendation of not having multiple Excel Lists in the same worksheet.
   •    Certain Excel features, like Excel Data Filters, do not work on multiple Excel Lists in the same worksheet.
   •    Excel Data Filters can be used to hide rows of data before making an Excel Chart.
   •    EZ-Chart does not include hidden rows and subtotal rows in the automatic data summarization process that is part of creating an Excel Chart for any Excel Chart Type.

What is an Excel List?

   •    An Excel List is the basic structure for the data in an Excel worksheet, and is required structure when using Excel formatting and analysis features like sorts, subtotals and data filters.
   •    The structure of an Excel List is very similar to a SQL or Access Data Base Table.
   •    The first row of an Excel List contains a Field Description for each column in the List.
   •    Field Descriptions are always in only the first row of an Excel List.
   •    Every field should have a Description, and Field Descriptions should be unique within the Excel List.
   •    Columns can have a Field Description and no data, but should not have data and no Field Description.
   •    Rows 2 through N of the Excel List contain the data for the fields described on row 1.
   •    Field Descriptions cannot span multiple rows because rows 2-N are always treated as data by Excel.
   •    An Excel List does not contain completely empty rows or completely empty columns.
   •    Empty rows, empty columns and the edges of the Excel work space are the borders of an Excel List.
   •    While they appear to be identical, an Empty Row and Empty Column are not the same as a Blank Row and Blank Column which contain at least one cell having one or more spaces in the cell.
   •    If the data in the Excel List is pure data it will not contain Excel Formulas.
   •    If cells in a List contain Excel Formulas, the formulas should only reference cells in the same row.
   •    Data rows containing formulas spanning multiple rows can be excluded when making an Excel Chart by first manually hiding the rows.
   •    Subtotal rows are not detail data rows and are excluded from EZ-Chart's automatic data summarization.

   •    Subtotaled data is not technically an Excel List because it contains formulas spanning multiple rows.
   •    Some Excel features are smart enough to use only the List Data on the detail data rows at the highest numbered Excel subtotal outline level.
   •    FYI.  Subtotal Outline Levels are denoted by the "1 2 3 ..." to the left of Column A in subtotaled data.
The highest numbered Subtotal Outline Level is the detail data being subtotaled.
   •    EZ-Chart automatically excludes all subtotal rows from the automatic data summarization used to create Excel Charts.

   •    Because an Excel List is a contiguous set of rows and columns, none of which can be totally empty, always separate column totals from the Excel List by one totally empty row (no spaces in any cell).
   •    A space in any cell of what appears to be a totally empty row makes the row blank, not empty.
   •    An empty row above Column totals guarantees that Excel will not treat the Column Totals as part of the Data in the Excel List.
   •    Column Totals should always be below the empty row marking the bottom boundary of the Excel List data.
   •    When column totals are not separated from the Excel List by a totally empty row they are part of the Excel List data, and as you may have unfortunately experienced they will sort with the data in the Excel List.

   •    To visually see the rows and columns of any Excel List, select any cell in the list and type Control plus Asterisk (Control-Key plus the Shift-Key plus the Eight-Key).
   •    Excel selects the entire List and highlights the contiguous rows and columns surrounding the active cell.
   •    In a subtotaled Excel List the subtotal rows are also selected and highlighted.

4.  If the active worksheet contains a non EZ-Chart created Embedded Excel Chart, EZ-Chart asks you to select a previouly customized and saved Excel Chart Type for use in replacing the current Embedded Excel Chart.
   •    When creating an Excel Chart without having first selected the columns to chart, EZ-Chart shows all Excel Chart formats using fields exactly matching fields in the data.
   •    When re-using a matching format the Excel Charts, preset fields and other settings are re-used.
   •    Four clicks creates identical Excel Charts from data containing the EZ-Chart formats preset chart fields.
   •    When re-using a non-matching format the Excel Charts are re-used with the new fields and settings.
   •    Chart Titles are constructed using the field names unless over-ridden in a matching EZ-Chart format.
   •    Re-using formats eliminates adjusting Excel's default Chart Type format after the chart is created.
