What is Xcelerator?
Xcelerator is an easy-to-use product that allows all Excel users to automate the creation and
formatting of Microsoft® Excel workbooks. It frees users from the mechanical, repetitive
and time consuming Excel formatting tasks associated with creating feature-rich and printer-ready
Excel worksheets, charts and pivot tables. Xcelerator adds new, powerful and never-before
available features to Excel. There is no other product like Xcelerator for Microsoft® Excel.
What are the new, powerful and never-before-available features Xcelerator adds to Excel?
- Only three mouse clicks and the entry of an Excel workbook title are required to have Xcelerator automatically create both the first Excel workbook format and printer-ready Excel workbook for a new set of unique input field descriptions and data.
- In seconds users can modify and / or duplicate any Xcelerator workbook format to create an entirely different Excel workbook format.
- Xcelerator automatically selects only the applicable Excel workbook formats for each set of input fields irrespective of the input field order; i.e. 5 input fields in any of the 120 possible orders yields one set of Xcelerator Excel workbook formats applicable to only those 5 fields.
- Before automatically creating and formatting an Excel workbook Xcelerator asks the user to choose from among the applicable Excel workbook formats. If there are no existing formats Xcelerator asks for a workbook title, and automatically creates the first workbook format and an Excel workbook from the new format.
- With only two mouse clicks users can convert from one workbook format to another workbook format for the same set of data. Users never have to go back to the original source of their input data in order to be able to convert to an entirely different workbook format using the same set of data. No matter how the input data has been formatted by Xcelerator!
- Xcelerator automatically creates user-maintainable "Standards" enties for each new unique input field processed, and sets the initial default properties for the "Standards" field based upon an analysis of the associated field data.
- Users can maintain "Standards" changing such default properties as field type, output description, format, subtotaling option, etc.
- The "Where Used" function for "Standards" is used to compare and maintain the field property settings in the workbook formats containing the currently selected "Standards" field.
- Xcelerator uses the "Standards" field settings when automatically creating the first workbook format for a new set of unique input fields.
- The output field description in a workbook format can be different from both the input field description and the "Standards" default output description.
- Output field descriptions can be split into multiple lines to reduce the width of the Excel workbook column.
- Rearrange the output order of fields, hide fields, and exclude fields.
- Add one or more calculated output fields.
- Stack and append input fields to create a single output field; i.e., stack City over State plus Zip Code.
- Perform real-time sorts by any of the input fields making up a stacked and appended output field; i.e., in Excel sort a stacked and appended City, State and Zip Code field by any or all of the three individual fields.
- Within Excel un-hide and hide all the fields initially defined as being hidden.
- Mix different subtotal types at each subtotal break level; i.e., mix a count of the number of customers with subtotals of sales and profit at each subtotal break by Salesman ID.
- Drag reference data to a subtotal break level; i.e., drag Salesman Name to the subtotal break level by Salesman ID.
- Automatically create a separate worksheet for the non-blank columns at each subtotal break level, with automatic drill-down and drill-back links between the separate break-level worksheets.
- Use Excel data filters with subtotaled data. This is impossible to manually implement in Excel.
- In real-time hide and un-hide empty data columns when switching between different subtotal break levels.
- By default subtotal rows are completely bolded for easier viewing. Excel bolds only the the break field and leaves the subtotaled fields unbolded.
- In real-time toggle all subtotal rows between being completely bolded and completely un-bolded.
- Sort the output data by up to six different output fields, including calculated fields.
- Output data is automatically sorted by the subtotal fields.
- Define multiple different custom formatted charts and pivot tables for each workbook format.
- Include calculated fields in both charts and pivot tables.
- Chart data is automatically extracted, accumulated and placed in a separate printer-ready chart data worksheet. This allows chart definitions to be independent of the Excel worksheet format definition.
- Automatically format Excel pivot table drill-down data to include data filters, column totals and to be 100% printer-ready with a custom page header and custom page footer.
- Change any or all of the Excel "Styles" that are automatically created for field descriptions and field data.
- Create and then automatically apply an Excel "Conditional Format" to the data in any output column. Conditional formats are applied only to data and not to subtotals.
- Excel templates are transparently maintained and used by Xcelerator. Simply click the Create/Save Template icon on the Xcelerator tool bar to automatically save Style changes, Conditional Formats, and custom Chart and Pivot Table formats for reuse by Xcelerator the next time the associated Excel format is selected for use with an identical set of input fields.
- Double click any data cell in an Xcelerator created workbook that includes Excel data filters to set and unset the data filter to the value in the selected cell.
How many versions of Xcelerator are there?
There are three "Retail" versions of Xcelerator, and two "No Cost" Lite versions of Xcelerator.
- Xcelerator for Excel is the core upon which all Xcelerator products are built. It quickly
and easily creates powerful printer-ready Microsoft® Excel worksheets, charts and pivot tables.
Xcelerator for Excel also extends Microsoft® Excel's capabilities with additional functionality
that would be impossible for Excel users to manually implement.
- Two specialized Xcelerator "Retail" versions feature tight integration with the Microsoft Business
Solutions "Small Business Manager", "Dynamics", "eEnterprise" and "Great Plains" accounting
software products.
Xcelerator for SmartList transparently converts any and all SmartList and Explorer favorites to
Excel using any of three new Excel export options. Simply click the Excel button and SmartList data
is transferred to Xcelerator for the automatic creation of a formatted printer-ready Excel workbook.
Xcelerator for Reports transparently converts reports to Excel in Great Plains, eEnterprise,
and Dynamics versions 6.0 and above. There is nothing to design, nothing to learn and no
additional report security to maintain. Xcelerator for Reports does not work with Small
Business Manager.
- The "No Cost" Lite version of Xcelerator for Excel and the "No Cost" Lite version of
Xcelerator for SmartList are automatically installed as part of the installation of the full-featured
30-day evaluation of the corresponding "Retail" products. The Lite version of Xcelertor for
SmartList includes the Lite version of Xcelerator for Excel. Both Lite versions produce
"Fast Automatically Formatted" printer-ready Excel workbooks and include user-definable
format-customization capabilities. The "Enhanced" Excel formatting features of the "Retail"
Xcelerator products are available in both "No Cost" Lite versions of Xcelerator, but these
features can only be used for a limited number of records.
Is Xcelerator a replacement for Microsoft® Excel?
No, Xcelerator is not a replacement for Microsoft® Excel. It works with Excel to empower
users to quickly and easily automate the creation and formatting of feature-rich and printer-ready
Excel workbooks. New, never-before-available advanced formatting capabilities
help to make Excel an even more powerful reporting and analysis tool.
Is Xcelerator a database extraction tool?
No, Xcelerator is not a database extraction tool. Xcelerator is an Excel creation and formatting
tool. Xcelerator works with almost all data imported into Excel using any of the
hundreds of existing database extraction tools. Xcelerator empowers
users with the ability to quickly and easily automate the creation of robust printer-ready
Excel workbooks using data from virtually any source, including existing Excel workbooks.
Database extraction tools are designed to extract data. Xcelerator is designed to automate the
creation and formatting of Excel workbooks. With Xcelerator, Excel users no longer have to be satisfied
with an auto-sized set of columns, and to always be faced with the grim, daunting and time-consuming
mechanical tasks of manually formatting their data. Users can now choose the most appropriate database
extraction tool without having to take into consideration whether or not it will be able to format
their data once it has been transferred into Excel.
Can't I use Excel to do the same things Xcelerator does?
Yes and No.
Yes, you can manually perform many of the formatting tasks that Xcelerator totally
automates. But not without expending significant time and effort each and every time you have
to format your data.
No, there are at least a dozen very significant advanced Excel formatting capabilities
users could never manually implement.
- Mixing different subtotal types at the same subtotal level,
- Dragging reference data to subtotal rows, and
- Correctly filtering data and subtotals
are examples of advanced formatting capabilities users could manually never implement in Excel.
Can I evaluate Xcelerator before purchasing the product?
Yes. The full versions of all three "Retail" Xcelerator products can be installed and evaluated for
30-days from the date of the initial installation of the core Xcelerator for Excel product.
For users of Microsoft Business Solutions software, Xcelerator for Excel is automatically
installed as part of the installation of Xcelerator for SmartList. Xcelerator for SmartList
must always be installed prior to installing Xcelerator for Reports. After installing
Xcelerator for SmartList, Xcelerator for Reports is installed using the Xcelerator
"Get Updates" program.
After the 30-day evaluation period ends, Xcelerator for Excel and Xcelerator for
SmartList continue to operate as "No Cost" Lite versions. The Lite versions produce
"Fast Automatically Formatted" printer-ready Excel workbooks forever. The Lite versions
limit the use of the Retail versions "Enhanced" Xcelerator formatting capabilities to a
maximum of 50 records. Except for the maximum 50 record conversion limitation, users
continue to have complete use of the capabilities of the "Retail" Xcelerator
products for testing and evaluation purposes.
After the 30-day evaluation period ends, both Xcelerator for SmartList and Xcelerator for
Reports continue to operate without any limitations on data from the Demonstration Company
for the Microsoft Business Solutions accounting software.
After the 30-day evaluation period ends, Xcelerator for Reports limits all report
conversions to a maximum of 50 records.
The "No Cost" Lite versions operate forever, and all versions of the software can be
freely updated over the Internet forever.
Can the 30-day evaluation period be extended by un-installing and re-installing the software?
No, the 30-day evaluation period for all Xcelerator products begins on the date of the first
installation of Xcelerator for Excel.

How can I get the latest versions of Xcelerator?
The latest "full" versions of Xcelerator are available on the Data Presentation Products website.
There is one download for the installation of both Xcelerator for Excel and Xcelerator for SmartList.
Xcelerator for Reports is always installed after Xcelerator for SmartList, and the installation
must be initiated through the "Get Updates" program. There is not a separate direct download
for installing Xcelerator for Reports on the Data Presentation Products website.
The "No Cost" Lite versions of Xcelerator are automatically installed as part of the 30-day
evaluation of the corresponding "full" version.
The "Get Updates" program installed as part of Xcelerator for Excel and Xcelerator for SmartList
is the only supported method for downloading and installing the latest "updates" for all Xcelerator
versions. It is also the only supported method for downloading and installing Xcelerator for
Reports.
Downloading and installing a newer version of Xcelerator over an existing Xcelerator installation
is not recommended. The current software installation program does not prohibit this from
occurring. Some changes made after the initial installation of Xcelerator will be lost as
the installation program will over-write existing Xcelerator files.
Users with older un-registered versions of Xceleator are encouraged to un-install the
software before downloading and installing the latest version. This must be done if the
currently installed version is less than version 2.3. Users are also encouraged to
un-install more recent versions of the software if they have not created Excel
formats that they wish to retain. The possibility of installation inconsistencies is
eliminated by un-installing older versions of the software before re-installing a newer
version.
Is it easy to install Xcelerator?
Yes, it is very easy to install Xcelerator!
If you have DSL or Cable Modem Internet access downloading the installation program
takes less than 60 seconds.
The actual installation of Xcelerator for Excel and/or Xceleator for SmartList
takes less than 60 seconds.
The immediate post-installation update of Xcelerator for Excel and/or Xcelerator for SmartList
takes less than 60 seconds.
Finally, if you are installing Xcelerator for Reports for use with Microsoft Business Solutions
accounting software, the download and installation also takes less than 60 seconds.
With high-speed Internet access the entire process of downloading, installing and updating
all three Xcelerator versions can be accomplished in under 5 minutes.
How do I update Xcelerator?
All Xcelerator versions are updated through the "Get Updates" program.
Run "Get Updates" from:
The "Get Updates" desktop shortcut
The Start >> Programs >> DPPI Xcelerator >> Get Updates menu option, or
The Get Xcelerator Updates option on the Xcelerator >> Xcelerator Help menu
on the Excel menu bar when an Xcelerator created workbook has focus.
If you have an Internet connection "Get Updates" immediately indicates the current update
status of:
Xcelerator for Excel and Xcelerator for SmartList
The Xcelerator Documentation
The Xcelerator Sample files, and
Xcelerator for Reports.
Note: the status of Xcelerator for Reports is only reported by Get Updates when either Xcelerator
for SmartList or Xceleator for Reports has been installed for use with Microsoft Business Solutions
accounting software. The update status of Xcelerator for Reports is not reported by Get Updates
if the initial installation of Xcelerator was for use with only Microsoft® Excel.
It takes less than three minutes to download and install all four updates using a DSL or Cable
modem Internet connection. However, it is rarely the case that all four updates change at the
same time.
Note: Users can manually run "Get Updates" to check on the current status of their
Xcelerator installation. Xcelerator also has an background function for checking the update
status of the Xcelerator installation. This background checking function can be scheduled
from within the "Get Updates" program. The result of this background check is displayed at the
far right of the Xcelerator tool bar within the Excel tool bar. If the "Update" tool bar icon is
active, indicating that an update is available, then clicking the icon launches the "Get Updates"
program. However, it is always preferable to exit Excel and if applicable exit the Microsoft Business
Solutions software prior to downloading and installing any update. This ensures that an update
to Excel and/or to the Microsoft Business Solutions software will take effect immediately rather
than the next time the software is started. If a schedule for checking the update status does
not exist, then it is recommended that the "Get Updates" program be manually executed on a
weekly basis. With an active Internet connection it takes only several seconds to determine
the current update status of the installed Xcelerator software.
Do I need any special rights or privileges to install Xceleator on my computer?
When you install Xcelerator you must be able to (1) update the registry, (2) create the install
folder which by default is "C:\Program Files\DPPI\Xcelerator", and (3) create an Xcelerator data
and work folder at the same level as your "My Documents" folder. On Windows XP the

to use Xcelerator's advanced functionality.
For Excel users without Xcelerator there are three options.
- Download and install the "No Cost" Xcelerator plug-in for Excel.
- Download and install the "No Cost" Lite version of Xcelerator for Excel.
- Purchase the "Retail" version of Xcelerator for Excel in order to be able to also quickly
and easily create powerful printer-ready Excel worksheets, charts and pivot tables.
Users opening an Xcelerator created Excel workbook on any machine without Xcelerator

can be completed in several minutes using a DSL or Cable Modem Internet connection.
Do users need to know Excel in order to use Xcelerator for Excel?
Yes. The more a user knows about Excel, the more Xcelerator helps to automate Excel.
Xcelerator is not a substitute for Excel, nor is it a substitute for having to know the
fundamentals of Excel's features. Xcelerator allows all users to quickly and easily
automate the Excel features they know. In addition Xcelerator allows users to take advantage
of never-before-available, powerful new features without having to know how to manually
implement those features. Xcelerator's new features are impossible for most, if not all, users
to manually implement. Yet for even novice users they are easy to implement with Xcelerator.

format that Xcelerator cannot create you can create the workbook manually or through some other
method.
Can Xcelerator be used to format existing Excel workbooks?
Yes, Xcelerator can be used to format the data in existing Excel workbooks.
And there are many different ways for Excel users to select data in an existing Excel
worksheet before clicking the Xcelerator tool bar icon to convert the selected
data to an Xcelerator formatted workbook.
- Users can select a single cell in an Excel list to convert the entire list. This is the same as manually selecting the entire Excel list or pressing Control+Shift+Asterisk anywhere within the Excel list.
- Users can select a range of columns to convert. Hidden columns within the range are not converted.
- Users can select a range of rows to convert. Hidden rows within the range are not converted. The descriptions in the corresponding cells in the first row of the Excel list will be automatically used for the field descriptions of the data.
- Users can select multiple separate regions within the same set of rows, or multiple separate regions within the same set of columns. The descriptions in the corresponding cells in the first row of the Excel list must be included in the set of selected cells.
- If a range of cells is selected in a worksheet containing subtotals, only the data in rows at the currently selected subtotal break level will be converted by Xcelerator.
For examplte, if the highest subtotal break level is 5, and if level 5 is currently selected, then only the detail data and none of the visible subtotal data will be converted by Xcelerator.

the accounting data.
Does Xcelerator for SmartList simultaneously work with multiple different versions of the Microsoft Business Solutions software on the same system?
Yes, Xcelerator for SmartList simultaneously works with multiple different versions of
Great Plains, eEnterprise, Dynamics and Small Business Manager installed on the same system.
How do you install Xcelerator for SmartList if there are multiple versions of the accounting software installed on the computer?
During the installation of Xcelerator for SmartList the user is presented with a list of
all known installations of supported Microsoft Business Solutions software. The user
can either "Select All" or individually pick and choose the different versions. It is
highly recommended that all installed versions of supported Microsoft Business Solutions
software be selected for use with Xcelerator for SmartList. If multiple selected versions
of Microsoft Business Solutions software point to the same software installation folder,
then the user will be required to manually de-select the older and no longer installed versions.
This situation will sometimes occur as a result of upgrading the Microsoft Business Solutions
software. The Xcelerator for SmartList installation program will not list versions
of Microsoft Business Solutions software that have been manually moved from their
default installation folders. These widowed versions of Microsoft Business Solutions software
will have to be manually included after the installation of Xcelerator.
If I did not initially install Xcelerator for use with all of the installed versions of my accounting software, can I add Xcelerator to these other accounting software versions at a later time?
Yes you can add Xcelerator to other accounting versions at a later time, and it is a fairly simple manual process.
In the Xcelerator for SmartList
installation folder, typically "C:\Program Files\DPPI\Xcelerator", you will find two Dexterity
chunk files. XC318260.cnk is the chunk file for use with Dexterity 6.x versions. XC318270.cnk is
the chunk file for use with Dexterity 7.x versions. Simply copy the appropriate chunk file into the
root folder of your Microsoft Business Solutions software installation and restart the software to
install Xcelerator for SmartList. If and when prompted to install a Dexterity library update you
should respond "Yes". You can easily determine the Dexterity version of your Microsoft
Business Solutions software by going to the Help menu and selecting the About option at the
bottom of the menu. The version of Dexterity for the Microsoft Business Solutions
software is included in the list of information that is displayed.
What do I do if I install an upgrade to my accounting software after I install Xcelerator?
If the Microsoft Business Solutions software upgrade is installed into an entirely new installation
folder, or if the upgrade resets the Dynamics.set file in the existing installation folder, you
should follow these simple procedures to enable Xcelerator for SmartList. In the Xcelerator for
SmartList software installation folder, typically "C:\Program Files\DPPI\Xcelerator",
you will find two Dexterity chunk files. XC318260.cnk is the chunk file for use with Dexterity
6.x versions. XC318270.cnk is the chunk file for use with Dexterity 7.x versions. Simply copy
the appropriate chunk file to the root folder of your Microsoft Business Solutions software
installation and restart the software to install Xcelerator for SmartList. If and when prompted
to install a Dexterity library update you should respond "Yes". You can easily determine the
Dexterity version of your Microsoft Business Solutions software by going to the Help menu
and selecting the About option at the bottom of the menu. The version of Dexterity for the
Microsoft Business Solutions software is included in the list of information that is displayed.
Can I remove Xcelerator for SmartList from some, but not all, of my accounting software versions?
Yes you can, but it is a manual process. It requires the manual editing of the Dynamics.set
file to decrease the number of installed libraries on line 1 by 1, and to remove the 5 lines
pertaining to "3182 Xcelerator Excel Export". This should only be performed by someone familiar
with the structure of the Dynamics.set file. It is always recommended that you make a backup copy
of your Dynamics.set file before manually editing the file.
Does installing Xcelerator for multiple accounting software versions require additional disk space?
Yes, it does require a small amount of additional disk space for each supported installation of
Microsoft Business Solutions software.
The additional space is approximately 150kb for Dexterity 6.X versions of the Microsoft Business
Solutions software and approximately 750kb for Dexterity 7.x versions of the Microsoft Business
Solutions software.
